The Nitty-Gritty: Permits, Locations, & Regulations
Let’s tackle the “headache” part head-on! Getting married in Yosemite does involve some specific steps, but with the right guidance, it’s totally achievable, and not as confusing as others make it out to be. Here’s what you need to know:
-
Permits
This is the non-negotiable first step. You’ll need a Special Use Permit from the National Park Service . The application process is really pretty simple, you can find the permit here, but it can be a bit time consuming. The NPS is old school and operates with snail mail for this process still, so follow these steps below and be patience! The hardest part is waiting to hear back from them, as there may be lag time:
- The permit needs to be completely filled out and mailed to the Special Park Uses, along with $150 check/cashier’s check/money order, to the address also found online through the link above.
- If approved, they will then mail you a permit, to approve your location/date/time, that needs to be signed and mailed back to the National Park Service, back to the Special Park Uses address, again.
- Then, your official wedding permit will be mailed to you!
Some other things to keep in mind here is the NPS will book your wedding up to one year in advance all the way to 21 days prior to your event. Just as long as your location/date/time are available still!

-
Location, Location, Location
Yosemite offers a variety of stunning locations for ceremonies, from iconic viewpoints like Glacier Point and Tunnel View to more intimate settings within designated picnic areas or meadows.
Popular Yosemite Wedding Spots? 💫
Glacier Point is the most popular location to get married in Yosemite National Park, and I will be honest with you, it is also the busiest location no matter the date or time. Okay sure, there will be less people a sunrise, but there will still be people around! So don’t let that surprise you. You definitely need help in this location with crowd control and keeping your location private from the public.
No, the NPS does not block off your location for you at your given times. You are on your own to control the public within your spot still!
Other Yosemite Wedding Locations:
- Tunnel View is the busiest spot in Yosemite, for the location size! Even though you can get married here, we really advise against it, and recommend just including it in your photo timeline to capture the photos you want here verses having to carve out a spot here – it’s just not big enough for your wedding and all the tour buses!
- Bridalveil Falls is often the first waterfall you’ll see when entering Yosemite Valley! It plunges an amazing 620 feet. In spring, it can really thunder, but during the rest of the year, it has a characteristic light, swaying flow and flows throughout the whole year. There is also a nice paved trail that leads from the recently expanded parking area to the base of this waterfall.
- Cathedral Beach is a scenic spot along the Merced River with towering views of El Captain right in Yosemite Valley. It is a beach & picnic area with picnic table and grills that sit back within the tress. Typically parking is available, but can be more limited than other locations and is a slight walk down to the beach area.
- Sentinel Beach is the opposite view of Cathedral Beach, and looks toward Sentinel Rock and the surrounding cliff faces, also along the Merced River. Yosemite Falls can be spotlighted here, if during Spring & Summer, all depending on how high the river is.
- Swinging Bridge is also located along the Merced River, and the bride itself connects from one side of the river to the other. There are ample wedding locations with different viewpoints available at this spot. Views of Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, and you can have your ceremony with any backdrop you prefer.
- Lower Yosemite Falls is conveniently located across the street from the Yosemite Valley Lodge in Yosemite Valley! There is no parking here unfortunately, but there is a shuttle bus stop right at Yosemite Falls. You can’t unfortunately have your ceremony beneath the falls on the viewing platform, which is typically very busy all the time with tourist, but you can have it in a designated area between a fork in the trail that has the upper section of Yosemite Falls in full view.
- Cascades Picnic Area In fall, this is a great wooded area with amazing privacy for a ceremony! In spring, it offers Cascades waterfall and beach area that is typically just a beach area by the end of summer. This is a more secret location, located off Highway 140 between the arch Rock Entrance (the Yosemite gate entrance coming in the west gate from Highway 140) and Yosemite Valley.
- Yosemite Chapel is located in the heart of Yosemite Valley surrounded by spectacular cliffs, beautiful meadows, & an amazing view of Yosemite Falls, right across the street. This historic building is the oldest structure in use still in Yosemite!

Regulations to Respect
As stewards of this incredible park, it’s crucial to understand and adhere to Yosemite’s regulations regarding group size, setup, noise levels, and Leave No Trace principles. You can look more up about these on the NPS site here. But just a few tips from our experience:
- If you are slightly over 50 people in an area that is limited, that is not the end of the world, but we wouldn’t advise on having 20+ over.
- If you want a specific setup in your wedding location, it’s important to work with a known wedding pro (aka us!!), on your wedding setup. That way we can advise you on what is doable and what isn’t based on our experience, having done this ample times before, and manage it for you on the day of.
- You can have unplugged musicians in the Yosemite wedding locations or a Bluetooth speaker for music. No amps or big speaker setups though!
- It is super important to remove EVERYTHING you bring into a location following your wedding. Every piece of trash included – that is the definition of leave no trace!
If this seems daunting to you, we do handled this for our wedding clients, as we are the first ones on scene and the last to leave as well!

Timing is Everything (and Season Dependent)
Consider the time of year when thinking about when you want to get married in Yosemite! Each season is very different and your experience in Yosemite will be as well.
- Spring brings roaring waterfalls & wildflowers, but can be chiller and have unexpected storms. Think layers and be prepared for anything!
- Summer offers warm long days, with perfect hiking conditions, but the most crowds. Think outside the box during this season and consider midweek days and early/later times!
- Fall boasts stunning colors & mild temperatures, but can still be fairly crowded. Wedding dates in fall go fast, so also be open to midweek dates in this season!
- Winter provides much less crowds and a snowy wonderland (at times!). It can be so magical to see Yosemite blanketed with snow, but some locations are closed during this time of year, like Glacier Point.
Each season has its own beauty and logistical considerations, with road closures, parking issues, and managing crowds. Do your homework on the time of year you are considering and be prepared for whatever mother nature might throw your way! The best news here? There is no wrong time to enjoy Yosemite and host your epic Yosemite wedding!
